Luis (my husband) got me interested when he took me to my first game back in 2006.

6 years.

Santino Quaranta.

Yes. I've also met Pontius, Najar, Quaranta, Clyde Simms, Moreno, Gomez.

5-When and why did you join La Norte?

Back in 2006, thanks to Luis. We have gone to almost every game since 2006.

6-What is your most memorable moment with La Norte?

Us open cup Final 2008.

7-Do you think we need more women in La Norte?

Yes so I have more people to chit chat with.

8-What other teams do you follow besides United?

US National Team.

9-What team/players do you hate the most in MLS?

New York. Dwayne Derosario and his weird hair.

10-What do you think about La Norte moving to 128 after 5 years at 118?

Its fun to sit with more people who are into the game.

11-If the team is moved to Baltimore, will you still be a fan? If so, would you still be as 'hardcore' or become a casual fan because of the distance/cost?

We would still find a way to go to every game.

12-Prediction time, what position will D.C. United finish in this year and how far will it go?

Not sure on position, but We will win the championship.

In the week leading up to the D. C. United home opener, I asked our members: "what is the one thing they were looking for from D.C. United this year? Whether it was an improvement, setting a goal, a question answered, whatever... But they had to just name one thing, here is what they had to say...

Some kept it simple:

Shawn: "Goals."

Brion: "A winning record."

Sandro: "to quote Carlos Estevez: Winners!"

Lucho: "Win and then win some more."

Some focused not on the end result, but in the journey there:

Kelly: "For the team to start the season in full force. New season, setting new goals of going further than years past... Injecting the fans full of energy."

Mike: "More coordination on the field so they actually look and play like a team."

Yessenia: "Seeing how the new players will fit in with the team. Will they be a good asset to the team?"

Some took the harsh approach, but some would say that deservedly so:

Dave: "A team that might actually give a crap."

Some just couldn't focus on 1 thing:

Kenny: "We need new leadership in the team! We have a lot of young talent out there... But my one thing is for Davis to be the "Pichichi" of our league. "

While others just want to break the funk:

Alex: "First of all, make the playoffs. We've been sitting at home for too long watching them on TV."

Yet for others, its either winning it all or nothing:

Juan: "To be champions or at least make the playoffs."

Alex: "Let's make the playoffs and go for the 5th championship. "

Douglas: "To be MLS Champions."

Rene: "I hope DC United wins the 5th star."

Kenny: "Bring the 5th cup home."

It's too early to get too crazy. But if you ask me, the 3-1 home opener win has a lot of us thinking just that: bringing the cup home.

1-How long have you been a DC United fan?

Since the very beginning! In '96 I missed only 1 game the whole season. I've been to 3 of the 4 championship games, missing only the one in LA.

2-What made you want to follow DC United?

It was easy for me. I've always supported the local club, and when MLS was formed, I chose to follow DC United. Some may say that I only followed them because of Salvadoran Raul Diaz Arce but they would be wrong. I was supporting United before he got here, and I'm still here.

3-What is your favorite DCU Player of all time?

It's hard to pick just one. It's a 3 way tie between Raul Diaz Arce, Marco Etcheverry and Jaime Moreno. They are great players, very charismatic, great to the fans. Total icons of the game.

4-Salary aside, who is the one player that you would like to see playing for United? Why?

Cristiano Ronaldo! He's a great player, he would help the team greatly, not on the field but off it. He would help get the stadium filled to the roof just like Beckham did for LA.

5-What player should have NEVER worn the black and red? Why?

Marcelo Gallardo. Not because he's a former River Plate player, but because he simply didn't give us anything. He didn't come to us at 100%, he was injured all the time. I was very disappointed, even if he did have one of the nicest goals I've seen in a long time.

6-What other teams besides DC United do you follow?

In MLS? None.... well, maybe the Columbus Crew for a little bit only because of Guillermo Barros Schelotto. I'm a big fan of his because he played for another favorite of mine, Boca Juniors. I also follow Manchester United, Real Madrid and Aguila, the team from my town of San Miguel back in El Salvador.
7-When and why did you Join La Norte?

Some time in 2005... My friend Walter got me to join the tailgate one day, I hung out with some of the guys at the tailgate and when I went to the section for the first time I really liked the atmosphere in the section and around it. Everyone was friendly, like a family. It was very cool.

8-What is your most memorable moment in La Norte?

Well, unfortunately it is not a good one.. Back in 2005, DC United had just come back from tying Chicago at their home in the playoffs 0-0. Never did I think that at the return leg, at home, they would crush DC United 4-0. That night I felt angry, mad, sad, I nearly cried. I was just in shock, couldn't believe it.

Hmm, now that I think about it, there is a some what funny moment.. When I got kicked out of the section for lighting up a smoke bomb. The thing is, I never lit it, I wasn't even near it but the cop wanted someone to blame so he blamed me and kicked me out. No matter, I was back inside the stadium minutes later. ;)

9-Will you be going in any roadtrips this year with La Norte?

I don't know, but I would love to go to NY for our "clasico" and also to LA, because of the big rivalry.

10-You heard the rumors: the team is going to be moved to Baltimore. Would you still be a fan and if so, will you make the trips to Baltimore to watch the "home" games?

I would still be a United fan and I would still go to the games, but definitely not as many as I attend now. Baltimore is just too far to make it a weekly thing.

11-What do you think about La Norte moving to 128 after 5 years at 118?

I think it will only help us, gives us more visibility. People know of La Norte, but they hardly see it. They will definitely see us now. But the section as a whole is better for the fans, the view from 118 wasn't good, but I really like how you can see the whole pitch from 128. Plus we're closer to the field.

2) Why did you join La Norte? I joined because it is a group that is passionate about supporting our boys, and that knows how to have fun at the same time

4) What team/players do you hate the most in MLS if any? Shalrie Joseph and anyone playing for the MetroStars (now Redbulls)

5) If La Norte could do one thing differently, what would it be? organizationaly we need to spread out responsibility so that one person (like you) isn't trying to keep it all together themselves Gamewise, maybe we should be more interactive with the crowd immediately surrounding us.

6) How do you think that we can make La Norte grow? we all need to be more active inside the stadium to talk with people andget them excited about the game. sometimes it is not about trying to convince them to join us but to help them enjoy the game, the rest should follow.

7) What was your worst/most disappointing moment as a United fan? hearing that there is the possiblity that we will leave DC.

When did you join La Norte?

Why did you join La Norte?

I used to sit over on the "loud side" but never was in a supporter group. A highlight for games was always when the Nortenos came in and you could just see colorful insanity across at the north end. That atmosphere really insprired my wife and I to join.

What is your most memorable moment with La Norte?

Silly as it sounds, when I brought a home made Red Bull pinata to the Red Bull game last year at RFK. The kids had a great time knocking the candy out and then the destroyed bull made it into the stadium and was impaled on a flag pole.

How do you think that we can make La Norte grow?

La Norte just seems like a good family. Everyone has a good time, everyone is cool together. It is a really supportive environment. I think that will help it grow. I still kinda consider myself an outsider in the group because I dont know many folks by name - I'm not the most outgoing person and I dont get to go to a whole lot of games each year - but I still feel welcomed.I wish though that the full stands were still up behind that north end. That would be a great, visible place and would attract folks.

What was your worst/most disappointing moment as a United fan?

That thumping by Chicago in the playoffs a few years back. Gomez getting the card for spitting. The vibe in RFK was really getting ugly. That left a bad taste in my mouth.

Which player you wish DC United would have never let go, and why?

Right now, probably Ryan Nelsen. I dont think we have fully recovered losing his presence. Although, losing Troy Perkins and Earnie Stewart were rough too because they brought so much and made us tough.

When and how did you first get interested in soccer?

As a fat little kid my mom signed me up. I did ok for myself but never wanted to pursue it. I kinda got out of it after a while but I picked everything back up when MLS opened and I was heavy into coming to DC anyway because of the hardcore/punk music scene in the mid 90s (Damnation AD represent!). I obviously dont play that much anymore unless it is with my daughter.

What other teams do you support besides United?

I really dont have too many other teams I follow except for Boca Juniors. On the NFL side, Steelers all the way.

Do you think DC United will ever have their own stadium?

I can only hope and pray that United with have a home close to DC (anywhere in the DMV is okay with but I really want them to be in DC proper). If they left the area, I would feel like that pinata I talked about earlier.

DC United is also competing this year in the US Open Cup as well as the CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE. Which is more important to you? Are either more important than the MLS Championship or Supporters' Shield?

MLS Cup is always number one. If the wheels fall off the bus for some reason and there is no way we can get to the playoffs, then my top priority would be to make things difficult for any team who comes to our place (especially Chicago, NY and LA).

If you were MLS Commish for a day, which teams would you get rid off, keep, and bring in?

A few things: 1> go single table 2> hook up with the USL and go to a relegation system. Then those teams who are solid (Rochester, Charleston, Montreal, etc) can get a chance to make more money. And it would make the whole table interesting because teams would be fighting for their lives each year.

1-Why did you join La Norte?

It's easy to see that La Norte has passionate fans combined with very knowledgeable fans. The other supporters have the passion, but to know an opponents backgrounds and to be able to custom tailor a taunt for it... genius.

2-What is your most memorable moment with La Norte?

Last year watching the 3 time changed match against the Dynamo in the pouring rain. Soaked but didn't stop any of us from supporting our ass off!

3-What does being part of La Norte mean to you?

Passion. And a commitment to the fans as well as the team. If the fans are the 12th man, then La Norte is the genius touch that sends the ball flying into the corner of the oppositions net.

4-How do you think that we can make La Norte grow?

By making the same kind of entrance and exits that we always do and welcoming others to join in. Tell them what were about and get them into 118 the next time.

5-Which D.C. United players have you met in person?

None... YET :-)

6-What was your worst/most disappointing moment as a D.C. United fan?

Pretty much the beginning to middle of last season. I mean to say before we picked up Crayton. You could tell that the passion of the game was gone for Wells, and we all had to pay for it :-(

7-Who is your favorite current D.C. United player?

Devon McTavish. True versatility and talented to boot. I expect to see nothing but greatness from him for some time to come.

8-What team/players do you hate the most in MLS?

As far as teams. NY RedBulls and NE revs have a pretty obnoxious fanbase. All talk but most of their fans know nothing about the game. As far as players. Blanco really pisses me off. I wish he could be banished from playing anywhere ever again. Just a true thug and bad sportsman.

9-When and how did you first get interested in soccer?

Played some as a child. Always liked the athleticism of it.

10-What other teams do you support besides D.C. United?

US National Team, Barcelona, and Argentinian National Team... in that order.

11-Salary aside, who is the one player that you would like to see playing for D.C. United?

Honestly it's a toss up. Leo Messi would do great things for MLS and futbol in general here in the states. But as far as talent is concerned I would say Pablo Piatti. This guy is going nowhere but up. If you've never heard of him then just put his name in youtube and I think you'd agree.

12-Do you think that Philly will become DC United's newest and best rivalry once they join the league or nothing can top our feud with the Redbulls?

I think the scars between us and NY run too deep for Philly to rival that.

1-When and how did you first get interested in soccer?

Like others in La Norte, the game runs in my veins. I've been into soccer ever since I slipped on my brother's old youth league jersey (no. 8). My love for the beautiful game really took off after the '94 World Cup; the final was one of the truly great games EVER played in the World Cup (and I especially enjoyed it because Italy lost).

2-Ever been to a World Cup? If so, what was that like for you?

Hah, I wish. I would love to go to South Africa in 2010 though. I have a connection to that country in that I have met and known several people from the Rainbow Nation. I think that the effects of the Cup would be great and far-reaching, and I would like to be there to experience that. us where you live: Washington, DC

3-When did you become a D.C. United fan?

I became a DC United fan in 1995, when the league was born. I was born in DC, and I wanted a connection to the city, so I followed DC as best as I could (dialup didn't get one far in those days you know...).

4-Who is your favorite D. C. United player of all time ?

Has to be one of 3: Eddie Pope, Marco Etcheverry, or Earnie Williams.

5-Have you ever gone to a road game? If so, which and what was that like?

Never been, although I would like to do either the Canada trip next year or the NY trip this year.

6-If DC United didn't already have a busy schedule, what team would you like to see it play in a Friendly?

I personally would want them to play Arsenal, my fav English team; I think pitting the two capital cities against each other would be awesome. If not Arsenal, then West Ham, Celtic or Rangers from Glasgow, Scotland, Sydney FC (I'm a bit of an Anglo/Aussie-phile), the Kaiser Chiefs or Orlando Pirates from South Africa, or LDU Quito from Ecuador (I went to Ecuador a few years ago and Liga is HUUUGE in Ecua).

7-DC United tells you to make them a CD containing 10 songs to help them get pumped up for the game. What is your song list?

When I first moved to DC in 2006, I went to a DC United game or 2, and I saw 118 wilding out and really wanted to be part of that (partly because I love to wild out myself). I was sick of all the fairweather fans in the cheap seats not cheering and getting all mad when I stood up and cheered loudly (like they were watching a freaking cricket match or something). I wanted a fan club that was approachable and had a lotta spirit and energy, so I think that naturally I was attracted to La Norte...

10-What is your most memorable moment with La Norte?

2 stick out in my mind, and they were both games against teams from Mexico. The first moment DC was when DC was playing Chivas (the real goats, not the wannabe American ones) in the CONCACAF Cup. It was cold, wet, and the entire stadium was made up of 75-80% Chivas fans (they were all giving us crap for rooting for DC in OUR HOME STADIUM).

The other moment of course was the infamous Club America game, where their fans were even more violent than the Goats fans -see in-game and post game altercations.One big thing sticks out in my mind about those 2 games. I remember cheering sooo hard that my voice was gone completely the next day with both games. We had a lot of energy and spirit both nights, and that was something special.

I like the way we all stuck together when they gave us crap (altho I didn't like that some of our guys got hurt as a result of these pricks) and that we came back harder in a classier way by cheering louder and harder than before.

11-What does being part of La Norte mean to you?

When I think of La Norte, I think of a tight-knit community, folks that'll watch each other's backs. A community whose goal is to contribute to the greater good of DC United's continued success. La Norte means a lot to me as a fan cuz I fully express my support for DC United with gusto and joy.

12-How do you think that we can make La Norte grow?

MEDIA, MEDIA, MEDIA BAAAAABY!!! I cannot emphasize that enough; hit the airwaves as well as we can. We need to take full advantage of all the social networking tools and media out there to recruit new members. Also, and most importantly, continue to be friendly to people (unless of course they're Red Bull fans, then we can just unleash the hounds) because that inclusiveness is La Norte's BEST attribute.

We started to use that line some time in 2006 because as you can clearly see from the picture above, it fits so well. It is hard to get people to come out for weekday games against teams that are so dull and boring... (Columbus, Kansas City, Chivas USA, etc.)

Interestingly enough, it is at these games that we sound the loudest. No, it has nothing to do with the empty seats all the way to the back that provide a nice echo! lol.

I guess the reason is that the few, the proud, the hardcore Nortenhos that do come out bring their "A" game because hey, they have to!

When did you join La Norte?

April, 2008 but I did hang out with your guys for quite a bit in 2007.

Why did you join La Norte?

Well, in 2007 I had season tickets to the section next to it. So I knew what it was, and what it was about. I had thought about joining them but it wasn’t until I read the article on “El Tiempo Latino” in which they were talking about D.C. United and focused on La Norte that I decided to join. The article talked about their members and when I saw that one of the members, Dougg, was not only from El Salvador but also an Alianza FC fan like me, that was what finally made me come up to them and ask about joining. I have been coming to the stadium since I’ve been living in the USA, in 1997. I’ve always supported D.C. United and I like how La Norte supports D.C. United.

What is your most memorable moment with La Norte?

It was the first game of this season, April 5th, after the game against Toronto. The whole experience but the celebration in the tunnel was simply beautiful. I had not been part of something like that. Tailgating with all the people and sharing food was great too.

What does being part of La Norte mean to you?

I feel that now that I am a member, I am showing my support D.C. United even more. Before I would just come, sit and watch the game, but now, I’m standing, screaming, chanting, etc. I am even telling other friend about La Norte, trying to recruit them so we keep growing.

How do you think that we can make La Norte grow?

By being friendly to others, advertising, giving free gifts.

Which D.C. United players have you met in person?

None!

What was your worst/most disappointing moment as a D.C. United fan?

Not getting to watch D.C. United play in the 2007 finals here in our home.

It was a sad night because even though DC United beat Pachuca CF, they were still eliminated from the CCC tournament.

Getting to say "what's up?" to "El Diablo" Marco Etcheverry after the match did make a few Nortenhos feel better.

He even asked if we were alright after seeing us have a few minor scuffs with some Mexican fans near or in the back of our section.

For those of you that don't know, "El Diablo" watches the DC United games from a box located right above La Norte.

That goes to show you how much Marco not only still cares about the team, but the fans.

I figured that I'd get the pic of the game rolling this year (since nobody else was doing it) before it got too late and we had to add 10 of them. I didn't get too many good pictures that game. Somebody said that my picture taking skills suck; I blame it on the new camera and shaky hands! Anyways, it's always good to have the little guys get in on the action. La Norte at the MLS Draft

MLS held it's annual draft on January 18 in Baltimore and, of course, La Norte was there. Altogether 6 Nortenos showed up, which ended up being about 1/4 of the overall United representation. The draft itself turned out to be pretty much a non-event for United considering that we only had three picks, none of them were there, and our first pick is going to play in France. Nevertheless, the DC group got the front seats and cheered and yelled whenever our team was even mentioned. Here's the highlights:

1. We waited forever for our first pick.

2. RBNY has the lamest fans in the league with the lamest chants I've ever heard. Most of them were directed at the Toronto and Philadelphia fans. I guess it's easier to go after the other teams who have never won anything. Plus they had to be told to shut up because they were yelling whenever a guy got picked and stepped to the microphone. Let the guy have his ten seconds for God's sake.

3. Some joker in the front row changed into the uniform of the team that was currently picking (shorts and jersey). Each time, for every pick, for all four rounds.

4. It was the first semi-official La Norte "event" of the year.

5. Apparently there are two Marriots at the Inner Harbor. Who knew.

Even though this year's draft doesn't look like it will turn out to be too beneficial to United, at least we managed to sign Gallardo and made some other international signings.

Our next event is the CCC game against Harbour View on March 18th. See you guys there!

With the much anticipated launching of Dougg’s MySpace page this week, my attention turned towards my own page, or lack thereof. It turns out I’ve had a page since November of 2005. For the life of me I can’t ever remember starting it or even remember why I would have. I don’t think that I was going through a “Searching the Internet for underage girls” phase and I don’t know too many people who have pages (or who will admit to it), so I’m pretty much stumped. Anyways, since I just finished school, I might actually have some time to work on my page.

There are several Nortenos who also have pages and I found some of them pretty interesting. You should really check them out because it might help you to get to know the guy standing next to you better. Or not. That could be a little too scary for some people. As I looked through the pages that I knew about I found a few things that surprised me and some that didn’t. I wanted to take a minute to thank everybody in La Norte who came out to the game this past Sunday night for a few different reasons.First of all, it was one of the finest shows of support for United that I have seen since I've been a part of La Norte. Going into this game we knew that we were going to be severely outnumbered. Throughout the whole game we were constantly subjected to taunting, abuse, attacks, having objects thrown at us, etc. Yet through all of that we never lost focus on what we were there for – to support United. I find it interesting that a group that is relatively small and greatly outnumbered could raise so much anger and hatred from opposing fans. We did this not by taunting, not by disrespecting their national anthem (as they did to ours), not by attacking them or throwing things at them, but by being man for man, the loudest, most dedicated group in the stadium. It takes a lot of guts to go in there like we did, knowing to a certain extent what the situation would be like, and continue to support the team and each other without being intimidated or forced to resort to the behavior of those who are against us. We could have cowered. We could have stopped singing. But we didn't, and that says a lot for the character of the people who make up La Norte.

Secondly, I am personally extremely grateful for the support that I got from you guys who were out in the parking lot when I was attacked unprovoked (for the second time that night) by a group of cowards and criminals who were dressed as Club America fans. I'd like to mention everyone individually, but I don't want to leave anybody out (the whole night is kind of a blur). Anyways, you know who you are. As soon as I yelled for La Norte everybody that was there came to help me out. Because of that things never got as bad as they could have if I had been alone (although I wouldn't have allowed myself to be in that type of situation). The cowardice of trying to attack a single individual with six or seven people absolutely disgusts me. We saw them for what they truly were when they realized that it wasn't just one against seven and that now they were in for a little more trouble than they had bargained for. They resorted to throwing bottles from a distance and then jumped in their van and drove off when security was coming and they ran out of bottles. They even left one of their cars in their attempt to get the hell out of there. I cannot find the words to express that disgust and contempt that I feel for them.

Lastly, but related to that, I appreciate the fact that so many of you stayed around when the cops came and I had to go through the questioning and re-telling of the story a dozen times. Being so far from home kind of puts me in a bad position in a situation like that if I were forced to have to go to the emergency room in D.C. or whatever, so I'm glad that you guys stuck around.

When and how did you first get interested in soccer?

I started playing soccer as a little kid in youth leagues in New Jersey, played in high school, and have played in men's leagues since college. I think I first got interested in soccer as a spectator sport with the 1990 World Cup and then went to several games during the 1994 World Cup.

What is the one main thing that grabbed you about DC United?

Though I wasn't living in DC at the time, at the start of the league I always thought DC had the best team name and colors, unlike some of the other goofy team names and jerseys (the Wiz?). Also of course DC played the best soccer and was perennial champions.

What is your best moment as a DC United fan so far?

2004 Eastern Conference Final, what else can you say, back and forth goals, extra time, extra pks, Nicky saves on Dempsey to send us to MLS Cup, an amazing game.
Who is your all time favorite United player?

Ben Olsen. He is the bearded face of this team. I always admired his ability to come back after breaking his ankle and losing his dream of playing in England. He is the heart, he is the furnace, he is the spasmodic energy.

Which United players have you met?

One time while on the street in Chinatown, Ben Olsen drove by in his car and I said "Hey man." and he said "Hey man."

What player (not former DCU) from MLS do you wish played for DC United if any and why?

Right now you have to say Angel, dudes scoring like 2 goals a game.

What other teams (not in MLS of course) do you support besides DC United?

I like to watch any EPL team with Americans on it namely, Fulham and Reading, but I don't have a foreign team that I support.

When did you first join La Norte?

I joined La Norte at the end of last season (2006).

Why did you join La Norte?

I went to Germany for the World Cup last year and before I left, my coworker and Norteno, Sam Luebke, found out and we discovered we were both soccer nuts, so he invited me to join him in La Norte for a couple games and I got hooked.

Even though you are new, do you have a favorite chant and if so, which one and why?

I don't speak Spanish, but I my favorite chant is:

How do you think that we can make La Norte grow?

La Norte is the little supporters club that could. Why would you want it to grow!?

1-When did you Join La Norte?

I joined La Norte March of 2000. One of the few people that has been there from day one year one.

2-Why did you Join La Norte?

One of the main reasons that I join La Norte was because the Latin American style that we were going to bring to RFK and United.

3-How does La Norte compare now to when it first started?

The obvious thing that has change the most was the size but not the heart and spirit that makes up La Norte. “Somos Pocos Pero Locos.”

4-What does being a true Norteno mean to you?

To be there every game trhough the thick and thin trhough the good times and the bad and cheer every minute as if we were the best damn team in the world.

5-What is your most memorable moment in La Norte?

Wow you have enough room on this Blog space? Really I have two (you guys made narrow it down to these two) Number #1 had to be Hands down the Trip to Chile. Gameday, Arguing with my family that United is going to win. Driving to UC’s stadium was almost like a road trip 2 ½ hr drive. Arriving there was freaking awesome. The boys were warming up and the group and I walk out of the tunnel that led us to our seats and belted a big US Size “DC UNITED” The look on the faces of Benny, Eski and Gomito were priceless. That really motivated them. Up Two Nil and I was singing all by myself “ Your not singing over there no your not singing, your not singing over there.” To the 200-250 Crusados and my mom says to me “ I don’t know you or you better stop” The game as you know did not go in our Favor, But was my Dream to see DC UNITED take on a team from my home country. The Second one My First Road Trip with La Norte to NYC. Getting on that bus excited as hell because we going to kick some scum butt. Singing all the way up there singing the same damn song up there for 6-7hrs straight. Watching DC Hand the Scum there asses on a platter. After the game, I remember leaving RFK NORTH with the Scums at the gate waiting for us. Our first fight. As we were leaving all I remember is some guy talking crap and then falling to the ground. I think everyone had at least 2 kicks on that guy before some one Yelled “SECURITY!!!” Then the Scum followed us to the bus spitting and throwing bottles at us. My buddy Carlos the quiet one all most gets nailed with a folding chair that was tossed over a fence. AHHHH memories.

6-What can we do to help La Norte grow?

I think we should be part of organization like Bobby’s Bunch or other groups like his or groups that helps out in the Community. So people can see what we are really like. Start recruit form the outside make them feel special and part of what the soccer fever is all about.

7-How long have you been a DC United fan?

I have been a DC United Fan since the first season in ’96.

8-What made you want to follow DC United?

I was a soccernut my Pops took me to see My Uncle Hugo Berley the Coach of Washington Diplomats its last 2-3 years. I was a ballboy he also played for the Chilean National Team played in the 1966 World Cups So long story short. Soccer in general runs in my veins and what perfect place to have soccer in Nation’s Capital.

9-If you could design DC United's next uniform, describe what your design would be like?

I liked the uniform that they played against Boca Jr. Those Red Ones they could be alternate jersey.

10-Salary aside, who is the one player that you would like to see playing for United? Why?

I would love to have this player that plays in Spain. The Name Is Mati Fernandez. The Chileans call him the “Maradona Chileno” He was born in Argentina but his parents are from Chile. The reason is this guy make even us look good. No look 30 yard passes. Speed to kill any D and foot skill that would rival Ronaldhino’s and that Christian “ I flop when a fly touches me” Ronaldo.

11- What city in the US/Canada or even Mexico should benext in line for an MLS team and why?

I would like to see a team in New Mexico or Arizonafor obvious reasons. The Big Hispanic Community. Iwould like to have the team back in Tampa, New CitiesI would like is Seattle, one of the Carolina's and atleast one closer to us like Baltimore or Richmond sowe have that Clasico feel to a game.

12-What do you think of DC United "fans" who ask opposing teams for autographs/their jerseys/pictures, etc?

What do they do for treason now a days? I think they should lose there privlages to come to the game dress that way. We should burn all their United gear. They can come to the games I could care less but those SOB’s Should never ever wear the black and red.

On April 21st, our brother in United got married and some of us were blessed with the oportunity to share this great moment with him. I love to pick on Josh, but for this once, I'll leave him alone and let him enjoy his moment in the sun. Congratulations Josh and Robyn. Very happy for you guys.

1-When and how did you first get interested in soccer?

When I was like 4, I started playing in a rec. league and been playing and watching and loving ever since.

2-What other teams around the world do you support besides United?

Manchester United and thats it... Although I will say I pay attention to some teams just of certain players or what not.. and my friend got me watching Athletico Nacional from Colombia now.

3-Name the player, or list the players that you wish would have never worn the DC United jersey and why?

Freddy Adu.. Other than an advertisement to get money he sucks.. He is not good never will be good.... and was a waste of roster space for 3 years... Thats only one that comes to mind right now.

4-Who is your favorite all time DC United player and why?

Mike Petke or Ryan Nelsen.. I think they both played with passion and never backed down... They were leaders of our defense. They were tough and they backed their teammates no matter what.. Both of them in my opinion are proven leaders and respected players.. They play with heart, passion, and toughness and determination. Can't ask for more from two defenders or any soccer player..

5- What is your worst memory as a DC United fan and why?

A few years ago when we didnt make the playoffs, that was embarrassing... Or you could go back two years ago when Chicago trounced us at home in playoffs 4-0 or whatever it was..

6-What friendlies would you like to see DC United play in the future and why?

I would like to see them play Manchester United.. Not only cuz my two favorite teams but think of publicity and money we could make... If we played Manchester a few years ago instead of chelsea, Fed Ex Field is sold out! I guarantee it... Imagine playing in front of 90,000 fans.. Unbelievable... Thats main one but really any friendlies against top european teams would be welcomed.... Like AC Milan, Inter Milan, Bayern, Lyon or any of them..

7-How would you coach DC United in the Open Cup? Who would you start/bench, what would you strategy be, etc?

I would use most of starters.. No point in playing if you ain't playin' to win... So a few bench players mixed with majority of starters and I would play attack... Score 1, 2, 3 goals and keep going..

8-When did you join La Norte?

I think this is my 4th year now.

9-Why did you join La Norte?

I joined La Norte cuz they are the most passionate out of all supporters.. They are loud and jumping the whole time... Yes eagles and Barra Brava get jumping and its nice but all you hear is the sound of La Norte drum and chants.. When they are all together singing and jumping they can't be beat.. I remember coming to games and just being like wow, I want to join them.. Make the games very enjoyable.. It's annoyin when watchin a game on tv to hear commentators say yes listen to drums of Screaming Eagles/Barra Brava..bull crap.. It's La Norte, Loud and Proud.

10-What is your most memorable moment with La Norte?

Probably going to US Mexico game, that was fun.. But every game is adventerious and entertaining in own way.. Never a dull moment..

11-Which is your favorite La Norte chant or song?

I like them all but id have to go with:

Who says Norteños aren't sensitive?

A woman from The Choir meets a gorgeous Norteño in a bar after a DC United game.

They talk, they connect and they end up leaving together.

They get back to his apartment and she notices that his bedroom is completely packed with sweet cuddly Talon teddy bears and DC United Player dolls.

Hundreds of cute small ones on a bottom shelf all the way along the floor, cuddly medium-sized ones on a shelf a little higher, and huge enormous Talons on the top shelf along the wall.

The woman is surprised that this Norteño would have a collection of teddy bears, even if they are of DC United's Talon, or player dolls, but she decides not to mention this to him, and actually is quite impressed by his sensitive side.

1-When did you join La Norte?

First match was 8/31/2002 vs San Jose. First home game after the Boca Juniors match.

2-Why did you join La Norte?

I had spent a couple of years in section 234, and various other spots on that side of the stadium. I had always stood and yelled during the matches, much to the chagrin of nearby soccer moms. I was about to join SE when I saw a post on Bigsoccer from Sachin recruiting new members. I took up the invitation and have been a Norteno ever since.

3-What is your most memorable moment with La Norte?

Has to be the 2004 Eastern Conference Finals. The atmosphere in the stadium, the drama, and the fact that the PKs were taken on our side of the pitch. I will never forget it.

4-Who is your current favorite United player and why?

Ben Olsen. The man is 100% class off the field and 100% monster on the field. Despite the setbacks in his career, he has persevered to become United's most consistantly solid player.

5-If DC United didn't exists, what team, current or past, if any, do you see yourself being a fan of and why?

All other MLS teams are crap.

6-Name your DC United best XI line up of all time?

Simpson, Nelsen, Pope, Boswell, Agoos, Diablo, Olsen, Harkes, Stewart, Moreno, Diaz Arce

7-What do you think of "La SuperLiga" tournament that is happening in the summer and of DC United's participation?

I love any international competition. It is an extra incentive for the players to perform, it gives international exposure to MLS clubs and gives the players great experience. Plus, it gives the fans a little different flavor. The only downside for MLS is that it falls right in the middle of the season, which is an even bigger hit this year with the Gold Cup and Copa America. But in the end, the teams who have the depth, and quickly develop their reserve players should do well.

8-When and how did you first get interested in soccer?

I was 10 when I first started playing. That was around the '86 World Cup and there was that small blip of soccer exposure in the US that happened ever four years (remember World Cup matches on Wide World of Sports)? I took to the game quickly, even though at that time the closest thing to a professional league was the MISL (Go Blast!). From there, I kind of grew up in parallel with the development of the game in this country.

9-What other teams around the world do you support besides United?

I wouldnt call myself a big supporter of any other teams, but I do follow international clubs that have American players. Especially Reading and Fulham. I also like to catch as many matches on FSC, Setanta and GolTV as my wife will let me.

10-Salary aside, who is the one player that you would like to see playing for United?

Gazza. Just Kidding. Honestly, I would love to have Ryan Nelsen back. But I dont think I would have a problem with seeing Ronaldinho in the black and red every other Saturday either.

11-If the team needed a coach, and you could pick any coach out there in the world, who would you pick and why?

Steve Coppell. He has done a great job this year, despite being a small, newly-promoted club.

12-What three things do you want to see in a new stadium?

1. Terraces!
2. Good beer!

1-When did you join La Norte?

October 2005.

2-Why did you join La Norte?

For years I had a half & later a full season tickets in section 219 which was behind La Norte. I always appreciated the energy La Norte brought in supporting DC United. Also back in the old days when the Galaxy had some support in DC, on days that the Galaxy did well, La Norte made sure there was still a loud DC United fan presence in the cheap seats at the north end. Also I was tired of doing the stand up sit down thing. Its much easier to just stand during the whole game and sit during half-time.

3-Which was your favorite roadtrip with La Norte?

The trip to the Swamp (RFK North) last summer. The Red Bulls tried to quiet us by putting us on the second level but it did not work. I've never gone to a sporting event where I sat behind so many empty seats.

4-What do you think of the relationship between DC United and La Norte?

I think its surprisingly good. Other MLS teams seem to treat supporters groups as a nuisance. With La Norte being smaller than La Barra Brava & the Screaming Eagles you'd half expect DCU to treat us as if we were expendible but I don't get that vibe.

5-Who is your all time favorite United player?

Marco Etcheverry.

6-Which DC United player current or previous would you like to meet and why?

See above. I'd just like to thank him for his years as a DC United player.

7-What is your most memorable moment as a United fan?

MLS Cup 1997.

8-What is the worst thing about being a DC United fan?

The offseason. Reading rumors about player acquisitions, looking for any scrap of DC United news is a sorry substitute for being at a game or watching one on TV.

9-What team/players do you hate the most in MLS if any?

I'd have to say the Red Bulls. Most of the hate is not rational which makes it a good hate. I guess it's caused by a mixture of their 11 years of failure on the field, consistent front-office incompetance (who can forget MPF) and the whinyness of their fans.

10-Which team in MLS do you think will give DCU the most trouble this year?

DCU. Frankly DCU tends to be its own worst enemy.

11-When and how did you first get interested in soccer?

I played on my first team when I was 6. I played on and off for a number of years. I was never any good.

12-Is soccer the primary sport your follow, if yes, why is that considering that is not the major sport in the USA?

Soccer is the primary sport I follow. It is strange. For years I followed DCU but I thought it would never supplant the Redskins and NFL for my fan loyalty. In the summer of 2004 I noticed that I wasn't interested in Redskin training camp (if you've been in the Washington area for any number of years you know how big that is here). I figured that once the Redskin regular season came I would pick up my normal interest. It didn't happen. I blame BigSoccer... :)

Why You Never Question a Drunken Norteño

I was shopping at the local supermarket after a DC United game. Was a little bummed out since we lost to KC 2-4 and it poured on us all night. At the supermarket I had selected:

A half-gallon of 2% milk,
A carton of eggs,
A quart of orange juice,
A head of romaine lettuce,
A 2 lb. can of coffee, and
A 1 lb. package of bacon.

As I was unloading my items on the conveyor belt to check out, I saw a fellow DC United fan standing behind me. He was wearing his "La Norte" hoodie on and I proudly displayed my brand new, "Adidas" Screaming Eagles jersey on. He watched as I placed the items in front of the cashier. While the cashier was ringing up the purchases, the drunken Norteno calmly stated, "You must be single."

I was a bit startled by this proclamation, but I was intrigued by the derelict's intuition, since I was indeed single. I looked at the six items on the belt and saw nothing particularly unusual about my sele ctions that could have tipped off the drunk to my marital status. Curiosity getting the better of me, I said: "Well, you know what, you're absolutely right. But how on earth did you know that?"

The Drunken Norteño calmy replied, "Cause you're ugly."

1-When and how did you first get interested in soccer?

I always have had a love of sports. Well back in 2nd grade I came to the realization that I was too small to play organized American football, too short to play basketball and my hands were too small to be good at baseball. Well I was coming down the stairs headed towards the gym/cafeteria at my school and saw an advertising flyer on the bulletin board for the Chemung County Soccer League. Then it hit me, I could try that. So I talked Mom and Dad into signing me up. My natural passion for sports took over from that point.

2-Is soccer the primary sport your follow, if yes, why is that considering that is not "the" major sport in the USA?

It is the primary sport I follow but not by a large margin. As I said above I have a love of almost all sports, except golf and boxing. As to why soccer is not the major sport in this country I think it has to do with the main reasons it is huge elsewhere around the world, tradition. Here in the US baseball, basketball and American gridiron all were born here. They have been entrenched in the American fabric for 100’s of years. Soccer was brought here by immigrants and was only really played in pockets (Northeast, St. Louis, et al). While I will never quit trying to convert more people to the game it is going to be an uphill battle.

3-What teams if any do you hate the most in MLS and why?

There is absolutely no question for me it is the NY/NJ/NYC Metro area Metroturds/Red Bulls. When I was younger I was a Cosmos fan, as most people were, but growing up in Upstate NY I have grown through the years to despise everything that comes out of that metropolitan area/toilet bowl.

4-Who is your all time favorite United player?

John Harkes. When MLS first allocated him to DC United, the MLS club located nearest to where I lived, it was the perfect setup for me. I was committed to being a United fan from that day forward.

5-Which DC United player current or previous would you like to meet and why?

With the various Meet the Team Day events and reserve matches I have meet many players so I really have no answer to this one.

6-What is your most memorable moment as a United fan?

It has to be MLS Cup ’97. For more than the obvious reasons, seeing my club win it’s title at home. It was also memorable because my truck died just before I got to the parking lot. So, postgame I had to wait for Bev to bring me a new battery to get me back home and then Dad and I could change out the alternator the next day.

7-You were there in section 120 before La Norte was born. Why did you choose those seats?

My whole life I have been a wiseass and an antagonist so 1) I could easily harass the opposition from there 2) Having played keeper at times the view was just fine with me 3) they were the cheapest seats.

8-What was your first reaction to La Norte?

I was a little confused at first. I was not expecting them to be there. After a while I noticed that their presence was going to add to the atmosphere behind the goal and saw how much better it would make it. Also it would help chase off the road fans who were just buying cheap seats and seemed to think they owned that area.

9-When did you really you join La Norte? Sure you were there first, but La Norte and you were more like roommates sharing a dorm. Did you get involved from it's birth? If not when, and more importantly why?

I can’t really say when I “joined” La Norte as you say it was like we were roommates. I guess really it was probably 2003. I don’t think I was really involved it it’s birth, aside from staking out the turf (Haha), mainly because I did not really know the founders personally at the time.

10- Since you were there before La Norte, what was it like for you when section 120 was taken away?

I still feel displaced in 118, even more with the change in the field configuration. I loved having my seat right behind the net. I will not rest until La Norte and I are back where we belong. We have gotten to the front row in 118. BACK BEHHIND THE GOAL IS NEXT!!!!

11-What is your most memorable moment with La Norte?

This one may sound odd but it is a bit of a sad moment. During the celebration at RFK after the 2004 Championship I spent time with Josh and some of the guys looking up from the pitch to our home in 120 knowing that because of that baseball team that we were going to lose our home.

12 – It is often pointed out that you don’t seem to sing and show the same type of passion that the rest of La Norte during matches, why?

I have wanted to address this, so thanks for asking. I have been involved in soccer for 30 years now (Yes guys I am old but unlike the younger Dave I am still playing this game, Haha sorry to throw you under the bus there Dave) and have been involved in all aspects. Administrator, ref, coach and played all 11 positions. When I watch sports I put myself mentally into the heads of the players I am watching play, I think it is the coach in me. That tends to distract me mentally from the singing and frivolity. So next time you guys are singing and you don’t hear me take a quick look into my eyes (No unlike Medusa you won’t turn to stone despite my ugliness) and see that I have the passion in there. Besides if you guys won’t help me learn more Spanish why should I sing the songs in Spanish. Thanks guys for coming down behind the goal with me and watching my back. No matter what I will have your backs as well.

By the way....WE WANT OUR GOAL BACK!!!!!

How and when did you get interested in soccer?

Uh, when I was born? I’m from El Salvador, and just like in any other Latin American country, futbol is life. Unfortunately for me, I was asthmatic all my childhood and into my teenage years before coming to the states, so I could never play for a youth team or anything like that. Moms wouldn’t even let me go to the stadiums and watch games live or, God forbid, join La Ultra Blanca. (Supporter Club of my hometown team, Alianza FC) When I came here, since there was no futbol, I got into American Futbol quite a bit. Learned it well, but when the MLS train came, I jumped on board of the DC United wagon.

What Cup competition do you think means more to “MLS” to win? CONCACAF Champions Cup, US Open Cup, the new Super Liga or other?

CONCACAF hands down. If MLS wants to continue to grow, and if they want to prove to the rest of the region that this league is for real, then they have to win these International Competitions. MLS has already proven that it can compete against Central America. Now it’s time for it to take it to the next level and not only compete well against Mexican teams, but actually beat them. The Super Liga is a complete joke to me. The US Open Cup is great, but that’s only on a national level.

If there is anything you could take from any other MLS team and give it to DC United, what would it be?

A MUTHA F’N BRAND SPANKIN’ F’N NEW STADIUM. We are the best in the league damn it, we have earned it… WE F’N DESERVE IT.

Salary aside, who is the one player that you would like to see playing for United?

Honestly, Carles Puyol. We need help on defense. We did alright last year, but could do a lot better. We need veteran leadership in the backfield.

What players if any, past or present, that “left” DC United, do you wish the team would have kept or they would have chosen to stay and why?

There are quite a few… I guess if I have to say of all time, I would say Raul Diaz Arce. I was really bummed out when he left, I really hoped something could have been worked out. Recently, I would say Donnet and Filomeno. I still don’t feel DC United gave them enough chances. They each deserved a full season as starters in my honest opinion for us to see what they really had to offer. Also, can’t forget Nicky or Petke. Those three were favorites of mine and they always showed love to La Norte.

Besides DC United, what other clubs do you support if any?

You know, I’m always catching crap about this because I have quite a few teams I follow. Now I don’t claim to be an expert in all of them, watch every game, or to even know 1/3 of their full history. Some I just try to keep up but it’s hard since I never get to see any games, or maybe 1 or 2 max in their season. I’m a die hard DC United fan of course, big fan of Barcelona, Manchester United and Atlas (Mexico). These three I keep up with quite easily since their games are all over TV. I also follow River Plate, Roma and Sao Paulo. Now these four are harder to keep up with since maybe only a fourth of their season games are on. However, they do show all their games when it comes to Libertadores, Sudamerican, EUFA Cup or The Champions, etc. Alianza FC (El Salvador) and Universidad de Chile (not Catolica). Are the hardest to keep up with because there are hardly ever any games on the whole season. All I go to go by is websites and news feeds, and sometimes they don’t offer much.

What is an LN song that represents your love for DCU?

Well it’s a fairly new one to our group, and I’m not picking it because it’s a song from River Plate either… ok maybe it has something to do with it, but it’s not the only reason. Check it:

Why did you join La Norte?

Well I actually have a Norteno Story in the works, had it for months but never finish it… or did I even get started? Hmm… Anyway… I go into detail about how I joined and why, etc. So I’ll give the short answer here. I wanted to join a group where I would be able to contribute, be a major player of the club. La Norte was in need of members and in need of help so I joined. Once I got to know the guys, I volunteered to bring the website back to life and Sachin, the leader at the time said I could. So I started with that, and then helped out with whatever other things I could… Little did I know what I was getting myself into… ;o) But if I had to do it all over again, I would. I got mad love for La Norte. It’s my home away from home.

What is your most memorable moment with La Norte?

You know, as I’ve been reading these, I’ve noticed that everyone has put a positive “memorable” moment. I’m not sure if something has to be positive in order to be “memorable” but I hope not, because mine isn’t. My most memorable moment with La Norte was the day we got “the email” from Fred Matthes. The one where we were told to either pull it together, or we wouldn’t be considered an affiliate of DC United, or an official Hinchada. This happen in the summer of 2004, when La Norte was depleted in numbers. The team sucked and the regular norteno fans had stopped coming. Only the few hardcore remained. La Norte, just like the other supporter clubs of DC United, have a quota to meet.. and they just weren’t doing it. I was fairly new when that email came, but it hit me hard. I can only imagine what it must have felt like for guys who had been there since day 1. Why is this moment really memorable? Well because that day marked the re-birth of La Norte. We, including me, a newbie, could have let it die. But no, the true nortenos weren’t going to go out like that. We picked up the pieces and started building it into what it is today. Ever since that day there have been other things that could have broken us that aren’t even worth mentioning… But they haven’t. They all have made us stronger. La Norte is still here, and we ain’t going no where.

Which Nortenos (besides yourself of course) really represent most what La Norte is all about?

I’ve been here only 3 seasons but there are quite a few guys that stand out for me.. Mainly, the current leaders of La Norte a\k\a “DCpUlos” who IMHO are the heart of La Norte: Jhonattan, Eric A., Dave, Luis, Josh, Mike and Joe. Each of them bring something special to La Norte, and without them La Norte wouldn’t have been able to have its revival and be where it is now. Big props to those guys. Gotta mention my boy Pepe, a guy who is a hardcore and true Norteno. I also have to mention, even though we always pick on him about being a media whore and not coming out as often as he should, but Carlos always brings it hard whenever he does come. It’s easy to see why he was one of the founders and original leaders of La Norte. We give him crap all the time, but the man brings the passion whenever he can. He still has the love for La Norte and DC United, and I’m sure if he could, he would be with us day in and day out. Even Mr. “I was here before La Norte” himself, Shawn, deserves a mention. He plays it down all the time, but you are a true Norteno man. It shows. There are many more guys that represent La Norte well, I can’t name them all but they know who they are.. When and how did you first get interested in soccer?

Like so many other Americans, it was in 1994, when the World Cup came here. I was hooked when the States lost 1-0 to Brazil in the round of 16. They fought bravely against the best footballing nation in the world (Thomas Dooley's bicycle kick off the line is my first footy memory). Two years later, DC United entered my life, and the rest is history.

Who is your all time favorite United player?

Well, of course, Diablo is up there, as well as Jaime, Gomito, and the same players everyone loves. But I'd have to say, my all-time favorite "other" United alumnus is Ali Curtis. In his days as our "super-sub", he came on and scored some vital and thrilling goals; most of them in front of La Norte. He was a hero to me, and I still have a picture of myself with him at an old Meet-the-Team Day. I almost forgot; Mike Petke. A rugged defender, and a class guy all round.

Who is the one DCU player that you are/were happy to have him leave the team, and why?

Only one? Well, they're both Bulgarian, so I'll count them as one. First, I nominate Hristo Stoitchkov. After our 2003 playoff loss to Chicago, when he shoved Bobby Convey, I wanted him gone. Second, Galin Ivanov. He was absolute crap. I'm kinda glad Freddy Adu is gone, too. Now we can get back to kicking ass as DCU, and not just Freddy+10.

Salary aside, who is the one player that you would like to see playing for United?

Thierry Henry, or Gilberto. Ronaldinho would look good in black, too. Wilf Copping from the Arsenal of the 1930s would've been a decent foil to Stoitchkov, and would've kicked his ass proper. Plus, being from the 30s, he would be crazy cheap.

Which was your favorite DCU-MLS Cup Game and why?

Well, MLS Cup 96 is still a religious moment for me, but MLS Cup 2004 was my first as a Norteño, and it was fun being amongst fellow Norteños and our Barra and SE brethren.

What was your worst/most disappointing moment as a United fan?

The 4-0 playoff loss to Chicago in 2005 was utterly humiliating. But my most disappointing moment came twice; the 2-1 defeat by Chelsea in 2005, and last year's robbery at Salt Lake left me gutted. Robyn wasn't too happy either, but that was probably just because she had to put up with me being moody for the rest of the night.

Of all the competitions DCU is in this year, which one is more important to you and why?

As usual, MLS Cup is my biggest priority, because I want that fifth star desperately. But a Champions' Cup would look pretty brilliant in the trophy case. I'll take a reserve cup, while I'm at it.

When and why did you join La Norte?

I was invited by Luis Chavez after he complimented me on my cape. I stayed because I wasn't intimidated by them like I was with the other two clubs, and they were just as crazy as I wanted to be when I was sitting in other sections, but couldn't. Although I have many friends in the elder groups, I can't imagine being anywhere else except in 120/118.

When and how did you become "the man behind the bombo"?

Well, I think Pelao didn't make a game one time back in 2002, and I had been playing for a song or two before then, so I took over for a game. That one game has dragged on for five seasons now. I think it's just because no one else there has any rhythm. ;) Nah, nah, I just like to drum. Having my own crazy songs as well as the others I've learned is motivation, too. You know y'all love the Ric Flair chant. WOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

What motivates you do what you do in La Norte?

Well, I dunno. I guess it's just my extreme love of DC United. I've been a fan since the club's beginning, and I'm a bit of a nutter anyway, so the boots and BDUs and beret are just my way of showing my love. With a name like Darth, I have to look a badass, you know. I probably don't, but whatever. I like it.

What's with the cape?

See above, and add "chicks dig the cape". Of course, they'd dig the cape more if some a-hole hadn't swiped it last year. I'm still hunting him down, by the way. I just wore it one day because I wanted to represent for DC; even though I'm a proud Virginian, I still feel a sense of pride having grown up in the shadow of the Nation's Capital. I was sitting with "The Choir" back then, and it was kinda lame. As I was leaving, I was approached by Luis in Lot 8 and invited to join. I wear a Marine Corps flag on Armed Forces Day, and I've worn the US flag in the past. Nearly wore a St. Davids flag to the Olimpia match, but unfortunately, it's in Crew colors. I may not have been the first, but I think I'm the most famous for wearing the flag round RFK.

What do you think has been La Norte's best moment since its birth in 2001?

I'm guessing best moment on this one. Hmm...I'd have to say having EVERYONE come to our section for the 2004 penalty shootout. 6-2 against the MetroScum in that same season was pretty wild, too. We did a travelling tour of RFK after some of the goals. Oh, and Kevin Payne mentioning us first at the post-championship rally was pretty damn cool, too.

When and how did you first get interested in soccer?

When I was 8. I was playing American Tackle ball and since I was the smallest kid on the team they were not playing me. I ended up quitting and my parents mentioned that my brother was playing soccer. My thought was what the heck is soccer. Anyway I decided ok I'll try and feel in love with the game, even to the point I thought I could take on Pele' and beat him. By the time I was 12 I had the saying "I play soccer to live and I live to play soccer."

What other teams (not in MLS) do you support besides United if any?

Man United - started in the late 90's when most of the games I was able to get were United games... It was and still is a joy watching Ryan Giggs flying up and down the wingsI also follow Fulham - in part due to all the Americans on the team; Reading - I like the way they play; and while I don't like them, I enjoy watching Arsenal - they always play an attractive style of soccer.

What city do you think deserves an MLS team right now and why?

Either Seatle/Portland area; Rochester, NY; or St. Louis - St. Louis has always been a soccer hotbed and in the case of the others they have done a lot at the lower levels of soccer and I believe would succeed if they moved into MLS.

What current MLS players you would love to have playing for DCU right now if any and why?

DeRosario - him in the attack with Gomito, Jamie, Emilio - damn that would be dangerous. Maybe O'Brien to run the flank opposite of Gros.

What team would you like to see United go up against in a friendly and/or tournament match and why?

Any of the follow - Chelsea and Real Madrid again, Man United, Arsenal, and BarcaThey would make for some great entertaining games.

Which players, current or previous, do you think La Norte connects with the most and why?

Bobby "Bozilla" Boswell...The one who shows us the love and Nicky...who has alway thanked us before and after the games.

Who is your all time favorite United player and why?

Currently Bobby Boswell, past The Pope, Nellie, Gomez and Emilio are close seconds.

What was your best/most memorable moment as a United fan?

That would be the same as my most memorable La Norte experience - the 2004 Eastern Conference Finals against NE. Fortunately I was able to be in and a part of La Norte to experience it.

When did you join La Norte?

Around 2002, don't remember exactly.

Why did you join La Norte?

In 2000 or 2001, I don't remember which, but I saw the group come in, the atmosphere and energy they brought and knew I had to be in that group. However my wife was initially put off (a little intimidated), but when DC played Boca and there were a bunch of Boca fans near where we sat my wife finally conceded. She had a good time, I had a blast, and the rest as they say is history.

What is your most memorable moment with La Norte?

That has got to be the 2004 Eastern Conference Finals against NE. It still gives me chills thinking about it. It was the best game I have ever been to, the play on the field was extremely entertaining, the energy and atmosphere were unbelievable, I can't put into words what it was like. Then to have the PKs literally right in front of us and having Nicky save on Dempsey to win the game... What a feeling, what a night, you couldn't help but get caught up in it.

How do you think that we can make La Norte grow?

Keep doing what we are doing... Just bring it every game, welcome all, have a great time, and just remember that it is about the jersey, the team, DC United, and never forget that.

Why did you join La Norte?

La Norte was new and loud as hell; they had the bombo and the big flag waving. You could hear them more than you could hear Barra/eagles. It could be because I sat near them in section 108. I emailed Carlos on their website and he told me to join us at the open cup game. We met up at West falls church Metro and rode in the La Norte Van (yeah it had a LA NORTE logo and was white)

What does being part of La Norte mean to you?

It means everything; I have been through so much with everyone. It’s amazing, because I was there when it was huge, I was there when it was about to die, and I am here now, and I will be there in the future when the whole Curva is full of NORTENOS.

What was your best roadtrip with La Norte?

When we went to Miami, FL to watch the US play against Argentina. Me, Sachin, Joe and his friend drove in a blizzard to Miami just to watch the game and drove right back. It was 80/20 crowd Pro Argentina, but we had the Bombo and every time they would start singing the BOMBO started and the 100 us fans would drown their voices out. After the game they all wanted to take a picture with the bombo. Its sucks that we lost though.

What was your worst/most disappointing moment as a United fan?

3-0 galaxy at home 2001. First game with LA NORTE in section120, we were hyped up to win and got killed all over the field. My nephew was visiting, which made everything worse, he was sad. I Got kicked out of the stadium for throwing confetti at the players, all around it was just a bad game. That and the fact that all my flags ended up missing, I felt that lose for weeks.

Which former DC United player, that is still playing, do you still cheer for and why?

When and how did you first get interested in MLS?

Right from the start. The 1994 World Cup got me into soccer, so I was excited that we were going to have a league in the US again.

Do you think bringing "big names" like Beckham will really help the league, or hurt it in the long run?

I think that it will help because it will get people interested in the sport in this country. The teams will make more money from better attendances and then they can start to get some real world class players. As far as the level of play goes, I don't think that bringing in guys who are past their prime (Beckham) is going to make a difference.

What is the maximum number of teams the league should have? Why?

I don't think that there should be a set maximum number. I'd hate to see a situation like they have in other leagues where they have 20 or so teams, but over the past 20 years only 3 or 4 consistently have any real chance of winning it (EPL, SPL, Serie A, La Liga, etc.)

You are from Delaware, why not follow NY Redbulls or NE Revs as oppose to DC United?

Because I'm not a dumbass. Seriously though, I wanted to support a team that was close enough to go to the games, so Revs were never really a consideration. As for NY/NJ, there are two things that every father in the Philly area raises their sons to hate - everything from NY and everything from Dallas. So for me, there was never any question about which team I'd support.

Which United players have you met?

Quite a few over the years. The most memorable are Moreno, Gomez (the night that he played the drums in NJ), and Olsen (because I hit his car with a soccer ball after the game).

Which player do you think really represents what the team is about?

Ben Olsen. He plays hard and with a lot of heart. He's one of the last guys that you'll ever see give up.

Who is your favorite current United player?

Moreno - current and all time. I also like Boswell a lot as far as current players go. And North. I predict big things for him - well at least he has a good name.

When did you join La Norte?

September 2004.

Why did you join La Norte?

I pretty much have to go to the games alone, so I wanted to be part of a supporters club. At least I'd have people to hang out with after my long drive. I looked into all three, and La Norte seemed the best fit for me (down to earth, looser structure, involvement in the game). Plus, it was at the lowest point in La Norte's existence, so I thought by joining up I could help make a difference.

What is your most memorable moment with La Norte?

There are a lot, but two moments really stand out for me. First, the 2004 Conference Finals win over NE. Second, earlier this year right before the World Cup started and we started singing for the USA at the end of the game and out into the parking lot. It was cool to have all these guys from different areas and different countries show their support for our national team. The fact that we are down in the end by ourselves has led to some good moments too. I was glad that they put the 800 RBNY fans right behind us. We got to represent LN and United in that end. I think that we did a pretty good job too (I'm going to do a Blog entry about that sooner or later - might even quote Shakespeare).

And your worst?

Probably when we lost to Chicago in the 2005 playoffs. That was just painful to watch. The 1-1 draw with UNAM was really tough too for some reason. I've never seen a draw that felt so much like a loss.

What motivates you do to what you do in La Norte?

I love United, and I like the camaraderie and brotherhood of being in La Norte. I want to see us continue to grow, but still keep the same mentality and attitude.

Why did you join La Norte? I met members of La Norte from a road-trip going to Scum-land. Luis, Pepe, Scelzo, Josh were just the coolest most down to earth guys and I was just getting into the sport from watching the 2002 World Cup.. They were carrying the bombo and it was the first time I’ve seen a drum so big and to
see the attention it bought.

What does being part of La Norte mean to you? It’s that 2nd family one has no matter what or how we feel we all have love for the same purpose are love for United.

What was your favorite road-trip with La Norte and why? Now that’s a tuff one... Maybe when we went to NY in Dougg's van. Luis, Dave Me and Dougg were at the rest stop talking to all the players and just pulling off to go home and Nick Rimando runs to the van to ask for any beer we can loan to him.

How do you think that we can make La Norte grow? By simply representing and supporting DCU.

The Outsiders

So I am a new Norteno for 2007 and beyond. My first live DC United experience was on May 12, 2002. The US and Uruguay were up first and we were up in 410 and seated behind a group of guys who looked like The Outsiders and repped Uruguay as hard the concrete that built RFK. They walked on guard rails on the over hang and were baked by halftime. They were the life of the section. Even though my bro and I were pulling for the US, we seemed to to enjoy each others presence and we fed off their energy.

Some guys behind us I guess didnt like them repping "the other team" and when Armas went down they told The Outsiders that Uruguay played dirty.

Wrong move.

Maybe it was the beer and the heat and the adrenaline but the two sides wouldnt back down. Everyone seemed to clear out after the US match and The Outsiders followed out the guys who were yelling at them. I dont know what happened to those two guys and I dont care.

Like the song sorta says, 'you dont tug on superman's cape, you dont spit into the wind, and you dont get at Dally when he has Johnny on his mind'

After the hysteria of the Nats match, I saw the Black and Red come onto the field for the first time. I remember the yellow of The Crew. I remember the red of Diablo's shoes. I remember being hooked even though we were in the wasteland of 410 with only two teenagers around us about three rows away. It was like finding something for the first time. Now I cant live without it.

In the next four years, my wife and I would come up a few times a year and sit in various sections. Now we are half-season ticket holders and we are looking forward to rocking in our new home with the rest of the Nortenos for long time to come.

I just got back from 6 years of Germany (not the military) and needed a club to fill the gap that was there in Europe. After hanging out with clubs there and the passion they had, I needed that here.

Out of all the United clubs La Norte had that passion for United. So it only made sense to join the rowdiest club for my home team.

How do you think that we can make La Norte grow?

I think this story is just getting started. As we implement our new plans and get the word out there, it's a natural progression that we will grow in size and strength.

Which Norteños (besides yourself of course) really represent most what La Norte is all about?

That would be you, Dougg.... xoxo...just kidding. I think it's all of us... even the members’ kids that come to the games. Each one of us comes from different walks of life, but we all bring something to the table and that's what makes La Norte so great. We can all enjoy each other's company and get fired up for United in the stadium. So I don't think it's one person or a group...but the group itself that represents La Norte.

What is your most memorable moment with La Norte?

The one that hasn't happened yet...this party is just getting started! However, I have had a blast every time...whether it be bus trips, running dizzy down the field at halftime, getting ejected, or having everyone at my wedding...it's all been great.

Norteño Stories X: DC United match I remeber the most

Some of us have added our stories "How I joined La Norte" et al. well let's see if we can add another area. The DC United match that sticks out most in our memories. Since it was my idea I'll go first.

For me it has to be MLS Cup '97. Seems a little obvious to all of you, eh. Yah, yah, yah, United wins it's second MLS Cup and at RFK too boot. Kind of dull their Shawn. Way to stay in character there. Well the match is only half of why it is the most memorable to me. My Dad and brothers came with me to the match as they do to all the "huge" ones, finals and opening matches. Well as everyone remembers it was another torrential downpour. Of course it 1) being an MLS Cup and 2) United being in the match traffic was a nightmare and we were all creeping along slowly. Just as I was coming up to the entrance to Lot 3 all of the sudden "bam" my truck just shutdown. All the electrical system were gone.

Then my brothers got and helped push me into the Lot across from Lot 3. We took a look under the hood and Dad tried a couple of thing to no avail. So we went into the game, know what was awaiting us outside after the game. As everyone knows, inside it was just miserable except for the outcome. We waited for everything. The trophy presentation, the team to bring it around the stadium to share with all the fans, all of it.

Then we went back outside to the truck. At that point we figured the most likely cause was a dead alternator. Next problem, back in 1997 (yes WAY back then) we had no cell phone. So it was across the street to the Armory where there was a pay phone. I called Bev, who was watching the game at my place with my Mom. She then had to go find some where at 7:00 pm on a Sunday to go and get a battery to at least get us to her house in Annapolis, not wanting to test how badly the battery would be drained by trying to drive all the way back home to Reisterstown. After the call we saw Roy Wergele on his way into the post game party and congratulated him.

Then we waited......and waited......and waited....for what seemed like an eternity but was probably more like a hour and a half. Bev then finally arrived with the battery. We then installed it and started out for Bev's house. Once there we left my truck there and all five of us crammed into Bev's Chevy GEO, talk about a tight fit, for the drive back to my place. Then Monday morning Dad and I drove back down, new alternator in hand, and replaced it.

So you see it is not always about the tailgate or the match that makes it memorable. Well that is my lame story, so lets here some more.

Norteño Stories IX: Roleplayin'

I don’t know if any of you follow wrestling, or “wrasslin’” as it is referred to most of the time. I’m not talking about amateur but WWE, ECW and TNA currently and WCW/WWF/NWA in the past. I’ve watched it since a little boy back in El Salvador... Was a die hard fan until about, oh 6 years ago when the business just became crap, thanks to Mr. Vincent K. McMahon. But that is a topic to be discussed some other time, and in a different blog, perhaps.

What I want to talk about though is a game that spun off of the “real” thing many years ago. A role-playing game if you will, that is played online, and based entirely on writing. A game in which you create your own wrestler and you join the “e-federation” of your choosing. There is a weekly show for which matches are booked. If you watch now, you see many wrestlers do interviews in which they talk trash about their opponent, whom they are facing next week. These are called “promos.” That is about where the similarities between the “real” deal and the game end though.

You see the way you play this game is by writing stories about your character which are called “role-plays.” Very creative, I know. In these “RP’s” as the are referred to, you can have your character be wherever he wants, do what he pleases and say whatever comes to your head. More often then none though, he has to talk about his opponent, federation you are in, etc. The way it really works is: a card is booked a week in advance, and then the owner of the federation gives you a role-playing “window.” An example would be: Monday to Thursday, 4 days to do 3 role-plays. 200 lines max each. So then you and your opponent bust out three “RP’s” throughout this time, trying to out-talk each-other while being as creative as you possibly can with those “RP’s.” Now after the deadline has passed, the owner comes, reads all the “RP’s” and grades them. Once he decides whose is better, that person, come the weekly show, will be declared the winner. Lets say the show is on Sunday. Well, that day the owners writes out the full card. Like I said, this game is base solely in writing. Pretty much picture what you see on “RAW” (WWE’s weekly show) but written.. Later on I link you to a show, I also link you three sample “RP’s” so you understand better.

Sounds like it could be fun? No? Sounds lame? Whatever, different strokes for different folks right? I like it though, and have been playing on and off since 98, getting better as the years have gone by...

Now I know what you are saying, why in the hell are you writing about this on a soccer-related blog? Well, I’ll tell you why... Because I came out of “e-retirement” recently and created a brand new character called: “Venom.” He is the young son of one of my earlier e-wrestlers, Scorpion. I was doing pretty well with him, won the World Title, but then lost it and then had a rematch at the next Pay Per view or rather, “e-PPV.” Now I had a storyline going for the longest time but I ended up running out of ideas for how to end it. I needed to do three role-plays for the e-PPV, and honestly had no clue on what to do my “RPs” about. So Saturday came, the day the role-playing window open, and I told myself, after I go to the DC United game, I’ll work on my first one.

After the game, which we won btw, I got home and started working on my role-play... The idea had come to me while at the game... Why don’t I continue the storyline here, after all, my e-wrestler, Venom, is from Washington, DC. So that day, two of my favorite hobbies came together. I incorporated what I do in La Norte and the team I love into my role-plays... While the first role-play and half of the second take place at RFK, the story doesn’t end there... but it ends some where in Washington, DC.

Now if you are still reading this blog entry, that means I haven’t bored you to death and don’t think of me as a dork... just yet... That probably means that you want to read more, and I will let you ready more, BUT before you click on the links below and read the “RPs” I got to warn you. Remember this is a game, based on wrestling with characters that only exist in a fantasy world. NOTHING IS REAL and while I may use someone’s real position, but not their name, (gulp) it is just a story.... The e-wrestlers that I, and other “role-players” around the world create, can be as nice as a flower shop worker by day, wrestler by night... or as sick and twisted as Manson himself. Some are extensions or ourselves, some, are completely made up wrestlers that came from the darkest parts of our imagination... Hope you enjoy them.... and not scared by them.. ;)

What's your story?

One of the original ideas for this blog was that, among other things, it would be a good place for Nortenos to give their story about why they joined. So far we haven't had too many. So, I'm asking everybody to try to put something in either here or in our Big Soccer forum. The reason for this is that we all really want to see our numbers increase over the next few years. The question is: How do you get people to join? That's where everybody can help out. If we know why you joined, maybe that will give us an idea of how to get other people to join too. Personally (and if we're still in RFK) I'd like to see us in 117 AND 118 in five years. Sounds too ambitious? Just think that SE and BB are going into their 12th seasons and they each have more than 2 sections. 2011 will be our eleventh season. I really think that we can do this. I was thinking of this idea of creating some sort of Quote page of La Norte in the Website. I know there is one from Chino Alegria in the old website. This one is from last season friendly against Celtic, you know the rest....

As 2006 comes to a close and we prepare for 2007, I thought that it was a good time for a wrap up of the past year from a La Norte perspective. So here it is. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly from my perspective:

Good:

1) The season started off for us on February 25 with out winter meeting. 11 Nortenos showed up, which was pretty good. We can do better this year though. Our new push up banner, jerseys, and flags were unveiled at the meeting.

2) Sellouts. Not the RBNY kind where you become a sell out by having your team pay for you to watch them play. We sold out our section a few times this season. If you look at the 2004 pictures on the web site, you can see how far we’ve come.

3) La Norte in the news. There was article in a Spanish newspaper about La Norte. I have no idea what it said though. Freetranslations.com sucks.

4) La Norte in a video game. Not really 2006 (more like 2005), but the game was FIFA 2006 so I’ll write it here. If you have the game (or FIFA 2007) you can see our La Norte banner in the stands whenever United is the home team. I’ve found that the best place to see it is if you play in Highbury (seriously). The SE and BB banners are the wrong size for that stadium so it’s all La Norte.

5) New Bombo. Since this is the “Good” section, I’m referring to the blue one. Possibly the loudest drum in MLS. There’s nothing like hearing that thing being banged on when we walk through the stadium.

6) Membership. Close to 100 members this season. I don’t think that we’ve ever been that high.

7)Our own section on Big Soccer, a blog, and YouTube site. Having the sound files on the web site was a big help too.

8) Getting back to basics. We started doing more of the little things this year that bring attention to La Norte and build up the camaraderie within our group. Things like tailgating, everybody going in together with the Bombo, etc.

9) New president. Wait… shouldn’t that go under ugly????

10) Everybody who showed up and supported United and La Norte

The Bad:

1) Our fifth year and we didn’t even commemorate it? It should have been on the shirts or something. How did we let that one slip by? Most marriages don’t last that long.

2) The incident on opening day, which actually had nothing to do with La Norte or any Nortenos.

3) One of our guys getting kicked out of the Swamp because CSC in Jersey is a bunch of jackasses.

4) The late season lull. It seems like we kind of fell asleep for a few weeks there. Then again, it seems like everybody in RFK was doing that, including the team.

The Ugly:

1) The preseason soccer game. Brutal. Just brutal.

I know that I missed a lot, but I only wanted to take up so much space. Feel free to add any in your comments. We already have some good things going for us in 2007, so stayed tuned.

Just to echo what had been posted on Big Soccer. This has been LA Norte's best year, since you guys invaded my section way back when. ;-)

A big shout out thanks to Dougg for his many sacrifices this season. He missed game action taking care of the tickets this season and we all thank you for it...................... so we did not have to do it.

Dougg also passed on his thanks on Big Soccer to Jhonattan, Dave, Luis, Mike, Eric and many others for how they helped out as well.

Let's all start thinking about ideas for next year on how we can make 2007 even better.

So everyone get their winter coats ready for February in Germantown as DC United begins it's 2007 campain freezing out it's first round opponenent in the CANCACAF Chapions Cup.

A View From the Other Side:

On October 15 I got the opportunity to see something that I haven't seen in over two years; La Norte from the outside. I brought my sister to her first game (no comments or I'll headbutt you in your chest) and got tickets behind the Screaming Eagles (afraid the La Norte experience might be a little overwhelming for her - plus I wanted to make sure that she got a good view of the whole field). I have to say that I was pretty happy with how far we've come since before I first joined. There's more people and more activity in the section. The new Bombo is loud as hell and is easily the loudest drum in RFK (if not all of MLS). I could hear you guys all the way over where I was and I was pretty proud of that, even though it wasn't a huge crowd. It made me realize how much more noticeable we'd become, but it also made me think about how much farther we can go. We want to be as noticable as we can be to the team and to the other fans. That will help us to attract new members.

Getting a view from outside made me realize a few things. First and foremost though is the fact that the little things that are easy to ignore are the things that actually do make a difference. If everybody brings one roll of TP or one streamer and throws it over the wire or on the field when we score, it's noticable and makes a difference. If we get several streamers over the wire it's noticable all game. Also, the flags are more important than I had ever realized. When everybody is waving them, it makes the section look very active. When there's none being waved, you really notice the difference. We should have a couple of flags going all of the time. You don't have to do it all game, but if you see that nobody's waving them, pick one up and wave it. Hand some out for other people to wave. It's very noticeable. So is the push up banner. When everybody's singing you can hear it on the other side of the stadium. These are little things that we can all do that are easy to forget about, but make more of a difference than you might realize.

Remember, it's always been La Norte's stand that we don't need a hundred fans to join us, just a handful of really good ones.

Game: NY Red Bulls @ DC United
When: Saturday September 23rd, 2006

So you are probably saying to yourself: What's the big deal about this picture? Why is it worthy of the mighty (rolls eyes) picture of the game award? What makes it worthy is because of the man in the middle of the picture. Raul Diaz-Arce. This picture is actually a big deal to me because, as hard as it may be to believe, I have never met the man. Most of you know that I never attended a single futbol game during the championship years. (96-99) I didn't actually set foot in RFK to watch DC United play until 03... or maybe 02.. don't really recall. It don't matter, that's not the story. The story is that I never got to see my compatriots play live. Sure I watched him in TV whenever I could... Making not only the Black and Red of DC United proud, but also the Blue and White colors of El Salvador. I never got a chance to watch him live like I said, and I never got to meet him either. Until this night. I was hoping to meet him at the pre-game party, but due to personal reasons I arrived hella late, and by the time I got to the party, all of '96 players had already made their way down to the pitch. I was really bummed out, once again the chance to meet "the man" slipped away. If it wasn't for DCU pulling the win, my night would have been complete shit... I say would have, not only for the win but because after the game was over, and we had put away our stuff at the elephant room, guess who we ran into? RDA! I got nervous and shit, fumbling through all my stuff trying to find my damn camera. Finally found it and politely asked if I could take a picture with him. He agreed and while Jhonattan got the camera to work, I took the time to thank him for everything he did for DC United and for El Salvador. The guy was really nice, but I didn't get a chance to talk more with him because this DC United staff dude came to push us out. Still, that made my night... Finally got to meet the one man, other than El Diablo (whom I've met numerous times) I have wanted to meet since the birth of DC United.

I told everybody to step it up and get it together, and since I'm not a hypocrite, here's my lame story about why I joined La Norte. Now nobody has ANY excuse for not posting, because this is GUARANTEED to be the most boring, worthless post on the blog. Here goes:

As a kid and even as a teenager, I hated soccer more than Dougg hates baseball. To me (and in Delaware) it was just a sport for rich little white boys whose mothers were afraid to let them play a sport where they might get hurt. All that despite the fact that my grandfather had played professionally in Germany. He took me to my first game in the late 70's (maybe early 80's). He was a West Germany and Bayern fan, so when the Cosmos (with Beckenbauer) came to Philly, he took me to see them.

I hated the Cosmos. I still do. I hate pretty much everything from New York. I like Beckenbauer though. Then the World Cup came around in 1994. For some reason I got really interested in it. I think it was when I saw them tackling. After that I couldn't wait for MLS to start up.

I've been a United fan from the beginning. I used to go to games with a couple of friends, but for different reasons, they all sort of dropped away from going. I went a couple of times by myself in 2002, and didn't make a single game in 2003 (I was laid off for 9 months that year so I couldn't afford it). In 2004 I decided to get back into it, but I didn't want to hang out at games by myself.

So I decided to join one of the groups. The thing that I liked about La Norte from the start was that, man for man, they were louder than any of the other groups. I also liked their songs, even though I didn't speak a bit of Spanish. I thought of BB as more of a drinking club that also happens to like soccer, and SE said on their web site that they do stuff in the community. I'll do stuff in the community when a judge tells me that I have to. Then La Norte got "The Email" in September 2004. I decided then that it was time to join. The fact that they were kind of smaller and an underdog attracted me because I felt that one more person joining them could help more than one more person joining BB or SE. The only thing that made me nervous about joining La Norte was that I was afraid that, since it was more Hispanic, it would be harder to really fit in. That's the really cool thing about La Norte though. We have so many people from different backgrounds, but everybody gets along well and welcomes new people in no matter who they are. If everybody thinks about it, you're friends with somebody in La Norte that you probably wouldn't have met or hung out with unless it was for La Norte. To me that's pretty cool.

NS VI: BAT-DARTH!

And now, the post you've all been waiting for. I'm taking a break from Comfortably Dumb for a moment to grace my fellow Norteños and Norteña (hello Riz :P) with my lame-ass contribution to Norteño Stories. (Cue the theme to "The Thorn Birds".)

I'm sure I've told this story before, but screw it, I like it. Plus, I have another small one to add from last night. Anyway, on to the first. Last December, I was shopping with Robyn at IKEA in Woodbridge. We were checking out the "As Is" section where you can get half-broken crap for cheap, and I noticed a little boy staring at me. Now I know you sick fucks are brewing Michael Jackson jokes in your head right now, but put those aside. We kept going on about our way, and paused to look at some Christmas ornaments when the kid's mother came up to me and said: "Excuse me, but our son thinks you're the guy that plays the big drum at DC United." The only thing that betrayed my secret identity was my red DCU jacket; I swear to the gods, I wasn't wearing my beret or flag or anything. It's kinda weird being picked out by some random person I don't remember seeing before, let alone them being like, five years old. I was thinking at the time that I might have to start acting like Adam West when he was starring in "Batman", as in not being seen drinking, swearing, whoring, or any of the fun things adults get to do. But I realized I'm Darth Norteño; I never drink during games, I swear like an entire aircraft carrier anyway, and as for whoring...well, let's leave that one alone. So yeah, that's that. I did have a guy ask me "Who's Darth?" last night in the bathroom at Bungalow Billiards in Shirlington the other night. I told him about La Norte and the special halftime thing for El Diablo, so we might have a new convert on our hands. One who took time away from holding his junk to look at my back. God, that sounds like a prison rape waiting to happen.

No we're not talking about that old rap group from the late 80's and early 90's.... Although, that was Leaders of the "New" School. Which would be us... Hmm... never mind. Anyway... This past Wednesday, 3 of the founders of La Norte came out: Gringo Loco, Carlos A. and Sandro T. (left to right in the picture) I honestly don't know what Gringo Loco's real name is, and now that I think about it... I don't know him at all... This was only my second time seeing him out to a game... The other time was the US vs. Panama game, when the US won 6-0 . Sorry man, hope you don't mind that I put your nick name up.

NS V: Josh's ritual that actually work!

So we're all hanging out at the parking lot before the game this past Wednesday against The Pink Cows... It's about time for us to go in when Josh says, wait a minute... You guys have to help me with my ritual... I was like what? What ritual...? So he brings out this bag with three red bull cans in it. Right away people started to give him shit for drinking it but they were empty.... So he places them on the ground and says that each represents a goal DC United will score... Of course, I don't believe in rituals and shit like that so right away I was telling him that he was going to jinx us... and if the Pink Cows beat us 3 to zero, we were all going to kick his Arsenal loving ass! "Oh it's going to work he says..." So Mike gets in on the action because obviously Josh just isn't man enough to crush 3 empty cans by himself. So they line them up on the ground, they are about to smash them when I tell them to hold on cuz I want to make sure I capture this, so I can rub it in his face later on tonight for jinxing us... I was sure he would do it.. 100%! I'm never wrong, I know everything and I'm always right... (I don't care what the wife says...) Anyway... I take the picture and then they proceed to stomp the cans down...

I took a picture of that too and then we go in, and as most of you guys know by now, DC United ended up winning the match 3 to 1. Now I completely forgot Josh's ritual and he did too because he didn't bring it up to rub it in... Yesterday morning, when I was looking at the pictures I was like "OH SHIT! The ritual worked!!!" Since I was at work, that prompted by boss to come out and tell me not to perform rituals during working hours... Ass. Anyway, Josh man, you ritual worked and I gotta give you props... I take everything back! You are the man! Now we just have to remember to peform it again on September 23, when the pink cows come back to RFK... Except that time, maybe we should crush 10 cans... :D
